New water species discovered in Angola

The expedition of National Geographic that is performing a research in Cuito and Cubango rivers in South east Cuando Cubango province in Angola was able to identify more than 450 species of birds, plants, fish and reptiles, during the first stage of the expedition.

 Fitted with sophisticated equipment, the 45 members of the expedition, among scientists, conservationists, teachers and university students from South Africa, browsers, cameramen, photographers and technical support staff, began work on the Cuito River headwaters have traveled 435 kilometers and made important discoveries.

 Every day, from 06:00 am to 05:00 pm, the team remains in the water aboard canoes. DNA samples are collected and the specimens found are sent, in short time, to a laboratory in South Africa for authentication of the results.

 The head of the National Geographic expedition, Steve Boyes, told Jornal de Angola that at this point, the team is working 65 kilometers south of Cuito Cuanavale town, toward the confluence with the river Cubango, a trip that takes them to the Okavango Delta in Botswana, last stage of the expedition.

A multinational team of, scientists, filmmakers, and journalists arrived in Cuando cubango province, Angola last May to begin an unprecedented, 1,000-mile-long expedition supported by the National Geographic Society.
